Getting to Know Photoshop's Basics The first and most important thing to know about Photoshop is that it's a lot more than the sum of its many feature-packed constituent pieces. There's more to the program than simply simply putting together a bunch of layers and zooming and arranging them into an image. You can't just click and drag stuff around, like you can in most other programs. In Photoshop, you have to apply specific commands to operate on specific elements of an image. You have to think a bit differently. In this section, I introduce the basic set of tools that Photoshop offers, and I tell you how to operate with those tools. I start with layers, because they're the way that everything in Photoshop operates. Then I move on to the other main items in Photoshop — groups, selections, and path tools — to give you a sense of how they work and how they apply to editing images. However, not all the tools operate the same way or work the same way. In the following sections, I also take a look at how the tools can come in handy for many of the tasks you want to do in Photoshop. Layers To understand Photoshop, you need to know layers. An image in Photoshop is built from layers. Creating a New Photoshop Project From the time you first open Photoshop until the time you run out of disk space, you're constantly creating new layers. And you're always making changes to the existing layers in your project. When you create a new project, you start with a new layer and a blank canvas. To create a new document, choose File⇒New. The New Document dialog box opens, as shown in Figure 1-1. • Use the Width and Height fields to specify the width and height of the new canvas in pixels. • Click in the Width and Height field to choose the size you want for the canvas. • Click OK to create the new document. When you create a new document, the background is black. You can add colors and other elements later on. **Figure 1-1:** To create a new document, Photoshop CS3 Crack + Download In this tutorial, we'll cover the basic steps to learn how to use Photoshop in the way you want to. My virus scanner just warned me that I have a Trojan on my system, and now I have to restart my computer. Your computer might freeze for several seconds while a software update is in progress, so you will want to save your work to a safe location before installing any updates. What is a Trojan? A Trojan is a small application or program that infects your computer without your knowledge. The purpose of the Trojan is to collect other information about your computer or surreptitiously access your computer's resources. Trojans can be used to steal data or to erase valuable documents on your computer. Do not hesitate to turn off your computer during an update process. Many trojans will take advantage of a computer's Internet connection to update or download additional Trojans. Using the Select Tool 1. 1.
